About us

One fire service,
fifteen agencies

The Marin County Fire Chiefs’ Association is the body through which Marin’s fire chiefs lead together.

MCFCA exists to promote informed and progressive leadership and to coordinate Marin County fire service activities — through legislation, prevention, training, standards, information and education — so that impacts from fire, medical emergencies, hazardous materials and disasters are controlled and reduced. Day to day, that work happens in the Association’s Sections, where subject-matter experts from every agency in the county work on the problems they all share. The Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Sections

How the Association is organized

The Association’s Sections bring together subject-matter experts from every fire agency in Marin, regardless of patch, to solve shared problems and identify where agencies can operate under common standards, policies, and guidelines. Modeled on the sections of the California Fire Chiefs Association, each Section pools countywide expertise so we can find economies of scale and deliver more consistent, higher-quality service to the communities we collectively protect.

  • Operations & Standards

The chiefs and officers who organize day-to-day response in the field. They work across agencies to maximize efficiency, execution, and standardization, so that no matter which agency arrives, the public gets the same coordinated, high-quality response. Standards work sits here too: where a policy or a guideline can reasonably be the same countywide, this Section is where that gets agreed.

    Subsection

    Hazmat

A countywide hazardous materials team made up of personnel drawn from agencies across Marin, specializing in response to hazardous materials emergencies.

  • Training

The chiefs and officers who specialize in training. They pool resources to prepare responders to the standards set above, and find where agencies can train together to raise the bar and be the best possible responders to the public. Shared training also means shared expectations — crews from different agencies arrive on the same incident already working the same way.

  • Fire Prevention Officers

The county’s fire prevention chiefs and officers, working together to standardize codes and policies wherever possible so Marin speaks with one countywide voice on prevention and code enforcement. One countywide voice on prevention makes requirements clearer for residents, builders and businesses, whichever jurisdiction they are in.

    Subsection

    MCFIT

The Marin County Fire Investigation Team, a countywide group of fire investigators convened to handle large-scale investigations across jurisdictions.
